Hammam & spa
Two different things share one name. The neighbourhood hammam is a public bath, men and women apart, with no prices posted online. The riad spa is booked and supplies the towels: 250 to 450 MAD for the hammam on three spa menus read on 16 October 2026. Same ritual, two products. Start with the neighbourhood one.

Two different things go by the same name in Essaouira. The neighbourhood hammam is a public bath house: tiles, buckets, men and women through separate doors or at separate hours. It posts no prices online. The riad spa is a booked slot, heated for you alone: 250 to 450 MAD for the hammam on the menus of three spas, read on 16 October 2026. The ritual is the same. What is being sold is not.
Both run the same sequence: wet heat, beldi black soap left on the skin, a scrub with the kessa glove, buckets of water to rinse. What changes is who is with you and what you bring. This page tells you which of the two suits you.
The spas cluster in the medina and in the beach riads. Heure Bleue Palais says on its spa menu that it welcomes non-residents, and its spa opens Monday to Saturday, 10:00 to 12:00 and 14:00 to 21:00. Elsewhere, ask before you book. If you want the hammam under your own roof, choose the house with that in mind in our Riads section.
In a neighbourhood hammam
You pay at the door, undress in the changing room and keep your underwear on. You fill two buckets, one hot, one cold. Then you sit in the hot room while the steam works: 10 to 20 minutes, with the black soap left on.
You ask for the scrub on the spot, from the kessala, or from the tayab for men. It is paid on top of the entry, so ask the price at the desk. It is firm, sometimes brisk: one word slows it down. The whole thing runs 1 h to 1 h 30 including the rinse.
The hours are the real trap. Men and women never share the room: some hammams have two doors, others two shifts. None of it is published online. Ask before you walk across town.
What a riad spa is selling
The spa sells a booked hour and the logistics around it: towels, robe, products, a room heated for you, mint tea at the end. A ritual runs 40 minutes to 1 h 30, longer when it adds rhassoul clay from the Middle Atlas and an argan oil massage. At Riad Perle d’Eau, the rhassoul wrap takes the black-soap hammam from €20 to €25.
On the menus we read on 16 October 2026, a 45-minute hammam with oriental massage costs 250 MAD at Riad Al Madina. The traditional hammam is 300 MAD at Ryad Watier. At Heure Bleue Palais, the 40-minute traditional scrub costs 450 MAD and the 1 h 30 ritual 1,080 MAD. Our Budget section sets these prices beside the rest of the day.
Our view: the neighbourhood hammam first, the spa on your last day. By then you know what you are paying for: quiet and a clean towel, not a different treatment. After three days of wind it is an evening well spent. For the other windy days, our comparison of things to do says what happens out of the wind, from studio yoga to cooking classes.
What first-timers get wrong
Take to a neighbourhood hammam: a kessa glove, black soap, a towel, flip-flops, dry underwear and small change. All of it is sold at a grocer or a herbalist. For the rest of your shopping, our Crafts & shopping section says what the town makes and how to buy it.
The mistakes, in order. Taking your phone out, which has no place there. Arriving on a full stomach. Staying more than 20 minutes in the hottest room without drinking. Leaving without giving the kessala anything.
Last, check it is open. In January 2024 the Interior Ministry had hammams closed at least three days a week in several Moroccan cities, to save water. It then told governors to readjust that according to the state of the dams (Africanews, 7 March 2024, and Le Brief, 5 April 2024). As of 16 October 2026 we have found no published decision for Essaouira province either way, so have your riad call. The spa prices here are those on each house’s published menu, read on 16 October 2026.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a hammam cost in Essaouira?
In a riad spa, 250 to 450 MAD for the hammam on the menus we read on 16 October 2026: 250 MAD with a massage at Riad Al Madina, 300 MAD at Ryad Watier, 450 MAD for the 40-minute scrub at Heure Bleue Palais. Neighbourhood hammams post no prices online. Ask the price of entry and scrub at the desk, before the changing room, and keep something back for the kessala.
Neighbourhood hammam or riad spa?
The ritual is the same: steam, black soap, kessa glove. The neighbourhood hammam is shared with the town. You bring your own kit and manage in Arabic or in gestures. The spa sells the booked hour, the towels and the quiet. Our advice: the neighbourhood one first, the spa on your last day.
What should I bring to a hammam?
A kessa glove, beldi black soap, a towel, flip-flops, dry underwear and small change. A comb and shampoo if you are washing your hair. The kit is sold at a grocer or a herbalist. A riad spa supplies everything.
Do you go naked in a Moroccan hammam?
No. You keep your underwear on, from the changing room to the final rinse, men and women alike. Stripping off entirely is the most visible first-timer mistake. Phones stay in the bag: nobody photographs a hot room.
Are hammams mixed, and what are the hours?
Never at the same time. Neighbourhood hammams separate men and women, either by two doors or by two shifts. None of it is published anywhere, so have someone call before you set off. A riad spa, by contrast, is booked as a couple or a family.

- WindsurfingWindsurfing reached Essaouira before kite. Moulay Bouzerktoune hosted the first PWA World Cup in Morocco in 2018. The bay teaches on flat water, Moulay is for experienced sailors in waves. Season April to September, in the afternoon, once the trade wind passes 15 knots.

- WingfoilWing foiling is the bay’s newest wind sport: the first commercial wing dates from spring 2019. Sand bottom and side-shore wind suit it, but the foil needs water beneath it, so set your session by the tide. Allow about ten hours to become independent and €123 to €130 for a two-hour private lesson.
