Planning a stay in Essaouira comes down to four decisions, taken in this order: the dates, the journey, the budget, then the paperwork. Dates first, because the wind blows above 15 knots two days in five. For Gnaoua festival week, we advise booking months ahead. The journey next, because no train comes here. Budget, because the bed makes the difference, not the plate. Paperwork last, because the passport, the dirham and the country’s clock each hold a surprise for anyone who has not read up.

Dates first, because the wind decides the rest

Essaouira has 147 days a year above 15 knots, on the 1991-2020 climate normals. That figure counts for more than any temperature. September and October for walking the medina, April to September for the water, November to February for an empty town and cool nights. When to visit goes through the climate season by season, the crowds and the classic mistakes. The commonest is a beach week booked for August and spent behind a windbreak.

Three dates change the price or the pace of the town. The Gnaoua and World Music Festival at the end of June, when rooms go months ahead. Ramadan, which pushes café and restaurant hours into the evening. In 2027 it should begin on 8 or 9 February and end around 9 March, by our calculation. The Ministry of Habous sets the date the evening before, once the crescent has been sighted. And August, when Moroccan holidaymakers join the foreign visitors. Getting here, then doing without a car

Essaouira has no railway station. The line ends at Marrakech, 175 km away by road. Allow 3 h on a CTM or Supratours bus, and about 2 h 45 without stopping by car. Essaouira-Mogador airport, 17 km out, runs seasonal routes only. Once here the question turns round: most visitors need no vehicle at all. The medina is closed to cars and takes about ten minutes to cross on foot: 760 m from Bab Doukkala to Bab Sbaâ, by our route calculation. Petit taxi for the new town, grand taxi or bus for the coastal villages, bicycle for the bay. Getting around says which to take where, what it costs and where to park if you did drive.

What a day costs, and in which currency

For a November 2026 night in the medina, allow 360 to 440 MAD for a double in a plain riad, on the rates four riads list. Beyond that, almost nobody here publishes prices in advance, and the date weighs more than the class of lodging. You cannot buy dirhams before you leave. The Office des Changes prohibits importing and exporting them (official site, read on 25 September 2026), so you change or withdraw on arrival. Passport, clock, phone, health: the things people forget

A passport valid for the whole stay is required, and an identity card will not do. Nationals exempt from a visa, including the British, the Canadians and the French, may stay up to 90 days, according to those three countries’ foreign ministries. Morocco’s acces-maroc.ma platform checks your case by nationality and says whether an e-visa is needed. Do it before buying the ticket, not the night before.

The clock has changed. Morocco went back to GMT on 20 September 2026, this time for the whole year. It no longer switches to GMT+1 after Ramadan. In practice Essaouira is on London time in winter and one hour behind it in summer. It is one hour behind Paris in winter, two in summer. Recheck any bus or flight time you noted before that date.

A SIM card is bought in a Maroc Telecom, Orange or inwi shop, and eSIMs exist. Bring your passport: at Orange it is the document a visitor’s line is registered to.
