Budget
The bed sets the cost of a day in Essaouira, not the food. For a November 2026 night in the medina, a dorm bed runs 85 to 200 MAD, a double in a plain riad 360 to 440 MAD, a smarter riad 900 MAD and up. The bus from Marrakech costs 100 to 125 MAD.

The bed sets the cost of a day in Essaouira, leaving aside the journey here. For a weekday night in November 2026 it runs from 85 MAD in a dorm to 900 MAD and up for a double in a smarter riad. These are prices posted for one date, not tariffs.
We looked for the official price lists before writing this page. CTM publishes no Marrakech–Essaouira fare on its home page, and the Fondation nationale des musées publishes no admission price (both read on 23 September 2026). Almost nobody here posts a price in advance. Hence the rule for this section: wide, dated ranges, never a figure to the dirham.
Four lines make up the day: the bed, the food, the activities, getting about. Only one of them moves the total.
The bed makes nearly all the difference
For the night of Tuesday 10 November 2026, the rates posted on 16 October run from 85 to 200 MAD for a dorm bed in the medina’s hostels. A double with its own bathroom in a plain riad comes to 360 to 440 MAD. A smarter riad starts at about 900 to 1,000 MAD, at Riad Dar Afram and Riad Baladin alike, and Ryad Watier lists €115 and up. The range narrows in November. It breaks in Gnaoua festival week, at the end of June, when some places double or triple their rates.
So it is the date that sets your budget, not the class of hotel. Our advice: pick the week first and the room second. Read When to visit before Riads.
Food is cheap, activities are not
Eating is what the town charges least for. On the published menus of three medina restaurants, a tagine costs 50 to 90 MAD. In a licensed restaurant, a main course and a glass of wine cost 125 to 350 MAD on the menus we read online in October 2026. Ask when you book whether breakfast is in the riad rate. What separates the four kinds of bill is in Restaurants. How the port grills work is set out in Fish market.
Activities sit on a different scale. In a riad spa, a hammam with massage costs 250 MAD for 45 minutes at Riad Al Madina, the hammam alone 300 MAD at Ryad Watier. Neighbourhood hammams post no prices online. A two-hour private kitesurfing lesson costs €100 to €130 depending on the school. The schools we read price in euros, and Essaouira Kite Paradise asks €330 for three three-hour semi-private sessions. If you are coming for the wind, budget the kite before the room: a lesson price does not move, a room rate does. The schools and their packages are in Kitesurfing, the two kinds of bath in Hammam & spa.
Getting about is cheap, getting here is not
In town you will walk. The beach starts at the end of Place Moulay Hassan. A normal stay comes down to one or two petit taxi rides. For Sidi Kaouki, the grand taxi is paid by the seat or for the whole car, agreed before you get in. Diabat is just a petit taxi ride. The customs and the fares are in Getting around.
Arriving weighs more. The bus from Marrakech costs 100 to 125 MAD depending on the company and the class, at the CTM and Supratours fares read for a departure on 20 October 2026. Buses and private transfers both need booking ahead in summer. The figures route by route, with journey times, are in Getting to Essaouira and in our Distances pages.
A good share of this is paid in cash: cash machines, withdrawal fees and exchange are covered in Money & payments.
Cheap here is not a lesser version of anything. The port fish, the walking and the medina are what the town does best and charges least for. What costs money, a room in festival week or an hour of kite tuition, buys time or wind, rarely comfort.
Frequently asked questions
What daily budget do I need for Essaouira?
The bed decides it, leaving aside the journey here. For a weekday night in November 2026 in the medina, reckon on 85 to 200 MAD for a dorm bed, 360 to 440 MAD for a double in a plain riad and 900 MAD and up in a smarter one. Meals barely vary.
Is Essaouira cheaper than Marrakech?
We have no matching survey of Marrakech, for eating or for sleeping. In Essaouira, the published menus of three medina restaurants list a tagine at 50 to 90 MAD. In Gnaoua festival week some Essaouira addresses double or triple their rates. Watersport lessons have no Marrakech equivalent to compare with.
When do prices go up in Essaouira?
Gnaoua festival week at the end of June, then July and August, and long weekends. For the night of 25 June 2027, mid-festival, Hostel Riad Maqam lists a dorm bed at 504 MAD, against 161 MAD on 11 June. Other places keep the same rate. The rest of the budget barely moves. The season-by-season detail is in When to visit.
What does a week in Essaouira cost?
Multiply the day by the number of nights, then add the journey, which happens once. For a couple, seven nights in a plain riad come to 2,550 to 3,100 MAD at a November 2026 nightly rate, before meals and activities. One taught activity, kite or surf lessons, moves that order of magnitude on its own.

Other sections in Guides
- Getting to EssaouiraThere is no train to Essaouira: the 175 km from Marrakech are done by road. A CTM or Supratours coach takes 3 hours for 100 to 125 MAD (fares read on 16 October 2026), a car about 2 h 45. Mogador airport (ESU) is 17 km out, on seasonal routes.

- Distances & travel times from EssaouiraRoad distance, drive time, one option without a car and a day-trip verdict for 25 destinations from Essaouira, Diabat to Tangier. A ≈ marks a figure we have not checked yet. A figure without it carries its source and the date we verified it.

- Getting aroundThe medina is closed to cars and crosses on foot in about ten minutes, by our calculation: most visitors need no vehicle at all. Petit taxi for the new town, grand taxi or local bus for Sidi Kaouki and the villages, a bike for the bay, guarded car parks outside the walls.

- When to visitSeptember and October for the town, April to August for the wind. Essaouira records 147 days a year above 15 knots and its monthly mean highs never pass 23 °C. This section gives the climate month by month, the festivals and the crowds, from the 1991-2020 normals.

- Health & safetyEssaouira is a safe town. The real risk is the ocean: rip currents, cold water, a wind that pushes anything afloat out to sea. Lifeguards in summer, in the bay only. A private clinic has run 24-hour emergencies since July 2024, and works are announced at the public hospital. Police 19, gendarmerie 177, fire 15.

- Money & paymentsCash first in Essaouira: the port stands, taxis, souks and small dining rooms take dirham notes only. Withdraw on arrival, in one go and in daylight, at the machines in the medina or on boulevard de la Corniche. At a card terminal, pay in dirhams. For Gnaoua, 24 to 26 June 2027, withdraw before it opens.

- Internet & SIM cardsBuy a local SIM on arrival, passport in hand, from Maroc Telecom, Orange or inwi. At Orange the card costs 20 MAD and 50 MAD buys 11 GB for 30 days on promotion (October 2026). 4G across town, 5G in Essaouira according to Orange. A coworking space in the medina for meetings.

- Living in EssaouiraA month or a year in Essaouira comes down to four things. A lease in the new town, best looked for between October and March. Three months without a permit, then the residence card from the police. Wind above 15 knots on 147 days a year. And a single French school, 65 pupils. What is missing, we say.
