Medina
You can walk across Essaouira’s medina in ten minutes: 760 m from Bab Doukkala to Bab Sbaâ by our calculation. Two axes cut through it and meet at Souk Jdid. Riads and small tagine rooms line its car-free lanes. In November 2026, a double in a plain riad costs 360 to 440 MAD.

This page follows the medina’s streets: how they fit together, how long they take, where to sleep and eat. Whichever way you go, it takes ten minutes to cross on foot. We recommend it as a base if you have come for the town. Our neighbourhood pages place it against the kasbah, the mellah and the port. The story of the plan and its UNESCO listing is told on our page on the listed medina.
One cross, three gates, the lanes
The plan is a cross. The first axis runs from Bab Doukkala towards the port, along avenue Zerktouni and then avenue de l’Istiqlal. The second runs from Bab Marrakech towards the sea, along rue Mohamed El Qory. They meet at Souk Jdid. The 2001 ICOMOS evaluation describes both axes and the chequerboard laid out for the original town. Between the axes, the lanes and derbs follow that grid.
Three gates are the ones you arrive by. Bab Doukkala, where the grands taxis wait, is in the north-east, Bab Marrakech in the south-east and Bab Sbaâ in the south. Carry on down avenue de l’Istiqlal to the south-west and you reach the kasbah around Place Moulay Hassan, then the port. To the north, rue du Mellah leaves avenue Zerktouni 60 m inside Bab Doukkala and leads into the mellah, the former Jewish quarter. Our advice: learn the cross before anything else. Lost, head for the nearest axis.
Ten minutes end to end
By our route calculation, Souk Jdid is 4 minutes from Bab Doukkala (290 m) and 5 minutes from Bab Marrakech (360 m). Bab Doukkala is 10 minutes from Bab Sbaâ, and 9 minutes from the clock tower along avenue de l’Istiqlal. From Bab Marrakech to the Skala de la Ville, allow 11 minutes. From Bab Doukkala to the Skala du Port, 14 minutes. No car gets in: taxis stop at the gates, and you walk the last stretch, luggage included.
Our advice: these are the times of someone who knows the way. Double them on your first day, while you learn the derbs.
Sleeping and eating in the lanes
Almost all the town’s riads are inside the ramparts. For a weeknight in November 2026, prices shown on 16 October run from 360 to 440 MAD for a double in a plain riad, and start at around 900 MAD in a smarter one. In a medina hostel, a dorm bed costs 85 to 200 MAD on the same night. Our riads section says which room to pick and what to ask before you book.
The small unlicensed dining rooms sit between rue Laâlouj, rue Mohamed El Qory and the souks. Three medina restaurants publish their menus, and a tagine there costs 50 to 90 MAD. Wine means a licensed restaurant, and our restaurants, sorted by neighbourhood give the bills. Our view: the medina is the best compromise for sleeping inside the walls. Everything is ten minutes away, and the kasbah, closer to the sea, costs more.
Nothing in the souks carries a price tag. Our guide to Essaouira’s crafts explains how to tell solid thuya from veneer and how to bargain.
When to come, and what to avoid
In our view the busiest week is the Gnaoua festival, 24 to 26 June 2027 according to its website. The 2026 edition reported more than 300,000 festivalgoers, so book your riad as soon as your dates are fixed. During Ramadan, expected from 8 or 9 February to 9 March 2027 by our calculation, many places open only at sunset, around 18:20 in early February.
Three things to avoid. A wheeled suitcase, which drags badly over the paving: a soft bag works better. Arriving without a meeting point, since many addresses have no number: ask the riad to send someone to the gate. An open bag in a crowd: France Diplomatie reports regular bag-snatching in Morocco and advises avoiding deserted places at night. Our rule: follow no one who approaches you at a gate unless your riad sent them.

Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to walk across Essaouira medina?
About ten minutes: 760 m from Bab Doukkala to Bab Sbaâ, by our route calculation. Allow twice that on your first day, while you find your way through the derbs.
Which gate should you use to enter Essaouira medina?
The one closest to your address: Bab Doukkala in the north-east, Bab Marrakech in the south-east or Bab Sbaâ in the south. Taxis stop at these gates, so ask your riad to send someone to meet you there.
How do you find your way around Essaouira medina?
Learn the cross: one axis runs from Bab Doukkala towards the port, the other from Bab Marrakech towards the sea, and they meet at Souk Jdid. If you are lost, head for the nearest axis, since Souk Jdid is 4 minutes’ walk from Bab Doukkala and 5 from Bab Marrakech, by our calculation.
How much is a riad in Essaouira medina?
For a weeknight in November 2026, allow 360 to 440 MAD for a double in a plain riad and 900 MAD and up in a smarter one, prices shown on 16 October. These are prices read for one date, not set rates, and Gnaoua festival week costs more.
