Day trips

Four trips fit into a day from Essaouira, and three need no tour operator. Sidi Kaouki, 26 km south, is a grand taxi ride from Bab Doukkala. So is the weekly souk at Had Draa, 30 km away. Ounagha, 24 km along the N8, and the Val d’Argan estate take a taxi hired for the whole car, or your own. Imsouane, 99 km away by road, is worth a hire car or an organised day. Marrakech can be done by coach, but it costs six hours on the road there and back. This page says which trip to buy from an agency, and what to ask first. Taxi, tour or car: the rule, destination by destination

A grand taxi is enough when the destination is a village or a beach with a taxi rank, and you stay put once there. An agency earns its fee when the day strings together several stops on a road without taxis, or when nobody wants to drive. A hire car pays for Imsouane and for two villages in one day. It is no use in town, where it sleeps in a car park.

Before booking an agency, four questions. The programme stop by stop, and how many of those stops are shops. Lunch, included or not. The pick-up, at a medina gate or outside your riad. How many people share the vehicle. A cooperative-cum-shop, a “viewpoint” with a salesman and a set lunch make a sales round, not a day trip.

Inland: argan, the Val d’Argan and Had Draa

The N8 reaches Ounagha in 24 km, and nearly every organised day stops at an argan cooperative on the way. In Ounagha itself, the Val d’Argan wine estate no longer publishes its visiting terms. Its old website now shows a domain-for-sale page (seen on 16 October 2026), and the hours and prices quoted by online guides contradict each other from one source to the next. Have the estate confirm your visit before you set off.

Had Draa, 30 km away, holds a souk once a week: the N8 to the Ounagha roundabout, then 5 km north on the N1. It is the trip we like best, and you cannot plan it: souk day falls inside your stay or it does not. No official source publishes that day, nor the days the Val d’Argan receives visitors. Ask the grand taxi drivers at Bab Doukkala for the first and the estate for the second before you try to combine the two. The coast: Sidi Kaouki and Imsouane

Sidi Kaouki, 26 km and 26 min south by road, is the day out without a car. Grand taxi from Bab Doukkala, the beach, lunch on the spot, back in the afternoon. No agency is any use for that. Imsouane is 99 km and 1 hour 35 by road without stopping, down the N1 through Tamanar, by our calculation. The descent to the bay is a poor drive in the dark. Hire a car for the day, or take the organised surf trip, boards included and back before nightfall.

Marrakech in a day: possible, long, rarely a good idea

Marrakech is 175 km away, about 2 h 45 by road without stopping, on the N8 through Chichaoua. The Supratours coach takes 3 hours each way. Its first departure from Essaouira is at 07:00 and its last from Marrakech at 19:00: nine hours in the city at most, for six hours on the coach and a return around 22:00. Our advice: sleep there one night, or keep Marrakech for the end of your stay, on the way to the airport.

If you still want the day, only Supratours makes it work. CTM runs a single departure each way, at 08:30 from Marrakech and 17:00 from Essaouira.
