Riads
A riad is a medina courtyard house. No car to the door, luggage carried in by hand, a courtyard that passes sound, a terrace on the roof. Choose the floor before the star rating: the top room, next to the terrace, is the quietest. For the water, sleep on the bay.

Stay in a riad if you have come for the medina, and in a hotel on the bay if you have come for the water. A riad is a courtyard house with a handful of rooms, almost all inside the ramparts. Four consequences follow. No car to the door. Luggage carried by hand over the paving. Rooms that open onto a light well and pass sound between them, and a terrace on the roof. For a weekday night in November 2026 in the medina, reckon on 360 to 440 MAD for a double in a plain riad and 900 MAD and up in a smarter one, at the rates posted on 16 October.
Why they are nearly all inside the walls
The medina was founded in 1765, on Théodore Cornut’s plan. The courtyard house is its original housing stock: a merchant’s home blind to the street and open to the sky. The story of that plan is told in our monuments section.
That stock exists nowhere else in town. The new town and the beach road are built as blocks and hotels rather than patios. Outside the walls, judge the building rather than the sign: a country house called a riad is still a guesthouse, perfectly good but a different thing. Our guesthouses section explains the difference. Our apartments section covers rentals.
What the medina changes on arrival, and at night
The taxi stops at a gate, not at the riad door: Bab Doukkala, Bab Marrakech or Bab Sbaâ, depending on the address. From there it is a few minutes on foot through the lanes. Our route calculation puts the Skala de la Ville, at the far end of the medina, 900 m and 12 minutes from Bab Doukkala. Ask to be met at the gate. It is the custom and it costs nothing. A wheeled suitcase makes hard work of that paving, and a soft bag travels better.
Inside, the courtyard works as a sounding box. Breakfast at 08:00 is audible in the rooms that open onto it, and so is a door closing at midnight. The stairs are steep and there is no lift. Our advice: choose the floor before the star rating. The top room, next to the terrace, is the quietest, and that terrace is the real reason to sleep here.
Three things to settle before booking. Heating, which not every riad has, and which matters from November to February. Access, if anyone walks with difficulty or pushes a buggy. Price, finally: stay with the orders of magnitude at the top of the page, which our budget pages set against the rest of the day. Our neighbourhoods pages say what each part of the old town is worth: the medina, the kasbah and the mellah are not alike.
Who will sleep better elsewhere
If your days happen on the water, a riad is the wrong tool. Wet gear, wetsuits to rinse, 08:00 starts. The bay hotels and the surf camps are built for that and save you two medina crossings a day. Our kitesurfing and surfing pages say which water suits which level, and our beaches pages which beach to pick for the wind.
One week is the exception: Gnaoua festival week, 24 to 26 June 2027, for which we advise booking months ahead. Our where to stay in Essaouira page gives the rule, our budget pages the premium we recorded, and our festivals section the dates of each edition.

Frequently asked questions
What exactly is a riad?
A traditional house built around an open courtyard, blind to the street, with a terrace on the roof. In Essaouira that building type exists only inside the ramparts. A hotel is not a riad, even with a patio added to it.
Can you drive to your riad in Essaouira?
No. The medina lanes are not drivable. The taxi drops you at a gate, Bab Doukkala, Bab Marrakech or Bab Sbaâ, and a few minutes on foot remain, 12 from Bab Doukkala to the Skala de la Ville by our route calculation. Most riads will send someone to carry the bags if you tell them your arrival time.
How much is a night in a riad in Essaouira?
For a weekday night in November 2026 in the medina, reckon on 360 to 440 MAD for a double in a plain riad and 900 MAD and up in a smarter one. These are rates posted on 16 October for one date, not tariffs. Ask when you book whether breakfast is included.
Which room should you choose in a riad?
The highest one, next to the terrace. It is the quietest, because the courtyard carries the sound of breakfast and closing doors down to the rooms below. The stairs are steep and there is no lift: if anyone walks with difficulty, ask for a ground-floor room when you book.
Is a riad suitable with a buggy or a weak knee?
With care. There is no lift and no car to the door, and the stairs are steep. From a medina gate it is a few minutes over paving, 12 from Bab Doukkala to the Skala de la Ville by our route calculation. Write before you book to ask for a ground-floor room and to be met at the gate.
