Ounagha & Val d’Argan

Ounagha is the crossroads on the Marrakech road, 24 km and 21 minutes from Bab Doukkala. The N1 turns off there for Had Draa, 5 km north. You come through for argan, the Val d’Argan estate or the weekly Had Draa souk. Allow half a day and eat dinner in town.

Ounagha (اوناغا) is a small town on the Marrakech road, not a district of Essaouira. Allow 24 km and 21 minutes on the N8 from Bab Doukkala, by our route calculation. Its centre gathers round a roundabout, a mosque and three petrol stations. From the first shops on the west side to the campsites on the east, the walk is 640 m and 9 minutes. Our view: this is a place you pass through, and this page says what to look for.

On our map of the neighbourhoods and surroundings, Ounagha is the easternmost of the twelve zones, and the furthest from the sea. The village of Ghazoua, the town’s other stretch of countryside, lies to the south on the Sidi Kaouki road.

A crossroads: the N8, the N1 and Had Draa

The N8 from Marrakech and the N1 from the south meet 5 km before Ounagha, then share the road as far as the town’s roundabout. There the N1 heads off north, to Had Draa and on to Safi. From Marrakech railway station, Ounagha is 151 km and 2 h 21 by road without stopping, by our calculation. Our view: if you are driving in from Marrakech, make your argan stops on the way, when the town is only 21 minutes off.

Had Draa is 5 km north of the roundabout, which makes it 30 km and 26 minutes from Bab Doukkala. Its souk comes round every week, and its name carries Sunday, Had. Even so, no official source publishes the day or the hours, so ask the evening before at the Bab Doukkala grand taxi rank. What is sold there and how to get there without a car are on our page on the region’s souks. Our view: this souk is the best reason to come through Ounagha.

Argan and the Val d’Argan

According to UNESCO, Essaouira lies within the Arganeraie Biosphere Reserve, designated in 1998 over almost 2.5 million hectares. The cooperatives that work the oil are outside the walls, on the Marrakech road, and organised day trips inland often include one. Our crafts and cooperatives pages explain how to tell a registered cooperative from a roadside shop. Our view: ask to see the work and the registration number before you reach for your wallet.

The Val d’Argan wine estate, which gives this zone its second name, publishes nothing any more. Its old website shows a domain-for-sale page, as we found on 25 September and again on 16 October 2026. Our view: do not drive out for it without confirmation from the estate, directly or through where you are staying.

Day trips that combine argan, the vineyard and the souk are compared in our day trips from Essaouira, with the questions to put to an agency.

Getting there, stopping, and what to avoid

Without a car, OpenStreetMap places a Lima Bus stop in the centre of Ounagha named for lines 5, 6, 8 and 9. The operator publishes neither their stops nor their fares as text. The Had Draa road runs through the Ounagha roundabout, and our page on getting around town and beyond explains the grand taxi, a single seat and the whole car. Our view: for a half-day with several stops, take a taxi for the trip, with the price agreed before you get in.

In the centre, OpenStreetMap maps two cafés, two snack bars, a pharmacy and a cash machine, round the roundabout and the mosque. Two campsites are marked just to the east. To sleep, we suggest town, 21 minutes away: our medina riads and our pick of Essaouira’s restaurants say where, by budget. Our view: a mint tea at the roundabout, then dinner in town.

Two things to avoid. The “argan” day that strings together a shop, a viewpoint with a seller and a set lunch: that is a sales round, not a visit. The N8 after dark on the way back: in Essaouira the sun sets at 17:40 on 21 December and 19:47 on 21 June, by our calculation, and we advise heading home before then.
