Essaouira reads as three rings, and you are nearly always in the first. Inside the ramparts, the medina, the kasbah, the mellah and the port fit into 56.7 hectares (UNESCO, entry 753, excerpt read on 25 September 2026). Allow a quarter of an hour on foot from Bab Doukkala to the Skala du Port, 1 km by our route calculation. At the gates the second ring begins, the new town and the bay, where residents live and kitesurfers sleep. The third is a crown of villages and surf spots, from Diabat at 5 km to Imsouane at 99 km, always by road.

This section opens one page per zone, twelve in all. This introduction does the job none of them can. It places every zone against the others and says where to sleep, depending on what your days are for. Inside the walls: medina, kasbah, mellah, port

The word medina covers the whole fortified town. In everyday use, the medina is the quarter of souks and lanes between Bab Doukkala in the north-east and Bab Marrakech in the south-east. One straight axis runs through it from Bab Doukkala towards the port, avenue Zerktouni then avenue de l’Istiqlal. Most riads, most of the unlicensed dining rooms and most shops are here.

The kasbah spreads around Place Moulay Hassan, on the port side. It first held the seat of power, the administration and the garrison, according to the UNESCO evaluation. Wider streets, merchants’ houses, most of the smarter riads and the galleries. It is the dearest quarter to sleep in and the shortest walk to everything: the Skala du Port and the beach under five minutes away on foot.

The mellah takes up the north, between the Skala de la Ville and Bab Doukkala. The former Jewish quarter has lost part of its fabric. In 2025 the World Heritage Committee voiced concern at its decay and asked Morocco for a plan to restore it. Few riads open here, and it is a morning quarter. In the evening, we suggest walking back along the avenue.

Nobody sleeps at the port. It is a workplace beyond the Porte de la Marine: the fish auction, the boatyards, the grills, and the Skala du Port, the only paid entrance in town. Allow five minutes from Place Moulay Hassan. Our advice: go in the morning, when the boats come in.

At the gates: new town and bay

The new town starts at Bab Doukkala and Bab Marrakech and has no clear end. It is where residents live. The CTM coach stops here, on Place du 11 Janvier in the Azlif estate, 20 minutes’ walk from Bab Marrakech by our calculation. You come for a bus, a withdrawal or a dinner at local prices. You sleep here if you are staying a month: we recommend its apartments, 10 to 25 minutes’ walk from the ramparts depending on the street.

The bay is the south of town, from the end of Place Moulay Hassan to the Oued Ksob. Its roughly 3 km of sand are lined by the boulevard and its hotels. It is the zone of the kite and windsurf schools, and the only one where a car parks outside the room. Our rule: sleep inside the walls if you have come to walk, on the bay if your days happen on the water. From Place Moulay Hassan the sand starts four minutes away on foot and ends an hour’s walk away. For the far end of the bay, we suggest a taxi.

The villages: Diabat, Ghazoua, Ounagha

Diabat is the village across the Oued Ksob. It is 5 km and 7 minutes by road, or an hour on foot from Place Moulay Hassan along the seafront and over the bridge. Dunes, the ruined Bordj El Berod, the Mogador golf course and a few guesthouses. It is the only village you can reach on foot from town, and the medina stays a taxi ride away in the evening.

Ghazoua is countryside, 10 km and 14 minutes along the Sidi Kaouki road. Guesthouses with gardens and pools, and argan trees. You sleep here with a car or a host who drives, not otherwise. Ounagha, 24 km and 21 minutes east on the N8, is an outing rather than a base. Argan cooperatives and the Val d’Argan vineyard, half a day including the drive back.

The spots: Sidi Kaouki, Moulay Bouzerktoune, Imsouane

Sidi Kaouki, 26 km and 26 minutes south, is an open beach with a row of surf camps and houses facing the ocean. Sleep there if you surf twice a day. Otherwise a day is enough.

Moulay Bouzerktoune, to the north, is the wave spot for experienced kiters and windsurfers, 29 km and half an hour by road. It is a day trip, not a neighbourhood.

Imsouane is 99 km and 1 h 35 south, mostly on the N1. Our view: a day is enough if you leave early. It is still a surf village best given several days, with its camps and its bay, or a stop on the way to Agadir.

The rule fits on one line: sleep where your days happen, because here everything is done on foot or not at all. Medina, kasbah or mellah for the town, in a riad. The bay or the new town for the water and for long stays, in a hotel or an apartment. Diabat and Ghazoua for quiet, in a guesthouse. Sidi Kaouki and Imsouane for the waves, in a surf camp.
