The kasbah holds the seaward side of the walls, between Place Moulay Hassan, the Skala de la Ville and Bab Sbaa. From Bab Sbaa to Bab Skala is 430 m, six minutes on foot by our route calculation. UNESCO describes it as the old administrative quarter, once the seat of power and of the garrison. Our guide to Essaouira’s neighbourhoods places it among the other zones. This page covers its streets.

Two kasbahs and a gate between them

There are two kasbahs. The old one, around the square, held Dar el Makhzen and the houses of dignitaries, merchants and consuls: 12 trading houses and consulates in 1780, according to the map-guide published in 2012 by Essaouira town hall and the Junta de Andalucía. The new one, the Kasbah Jadida, was laid out on a grid from 1863 for homes and warehouses.

Between them, the clock-tower gate, Bab Mohamed Ou Messaoud, was the kasbah’s main gate. Its inscription dates it to 1764, and the guide calls it the oldest gate still visible in town. Our advice: come in through Bab Sbaa. The clock is 125 m on, the square 260 m further, and you read the quarter in the right order.

What its streets hold

The souks are not here. The guide puts them on the Bab Doukkala axis, in the medina’s trading lanes, to the north. The kasbah lines up places of worship and merchants’ houses. On the square, the Jama’ el Atiq is the oldest mosque in town. 290 m away, Bayt Dakira occupies the former Simon Attias synagogue. The 2012 guide counts it in the kasbah, but we file it under the mellah, whose edge it marks.

The Danish consulate, built from 1766 on rue Hoummane el Fatouaki, is one of the town’s historic monuments, and the Gnaoua Festival held intimate concerts there in 2026. In the Kasbah Jadida, several warehouses have become galleries (2012 guide). Galerie La Kasbah on rue de Tétouan, 260 m from the square, lists 9:00 to 21:00 every day on its website. On the ocean side, the Skala de la Ville rampart walk lines up its cannon above the marquetry workshops. Our view: look up at the cut-stone doorways rather than at the shop windows.

How long, and at what time

From the square, allow three minutes on foot to Bab Skala or the clock-tower gate, and five to Dar Souiri, by our calculation. Bab Doukkala is 800 m and 11 minutes away. On the fishing harbour side, the Skala du Port is 250 m from the square and the beach 290 m.

The sun sets at 17:40 on 21 December and at 19:47 on 21 June, GMT, by our calculation. In June it goes down over open sea in front of the cannon. In December it sets to the right of Mogador island, seen from the square. In the evening everything happens on Place Moulay Hassan: the Taros lists 11:00 to 01:00 every day, 02:30 in summer (its own website). Our view: the port in the morning, the rampart at sunset, the square after dinner.

Sleeping, a drink, and what to avoid

Sleep here if you want everything within five minutes: ramparts, port, beach, galleries. Our riads in the medina and the kasbah sort the addresses. In late June the Gnaoua Festival puts its main stage on the square, and in 2026 the last concert started between 00:15 and 00:45. During the festival, we suggest a house towards the Skala. For a sunset drink, our licensed bars and rooftops tell the tea terraces from the rest.

Avoid the 60 MAD ticket if you have the Skala de la Ville in mind. It only opens the Skala du Port, and the ministry’s ticket portal sells nothing for the other rampart. Do not look for a clear boundary either: no official map we have found draws one, and OpenStreetMap reduces the kasbah to a single point.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the kasbah in Essaouira?

On the seaward side of the medina, between Bab Sbaa, Place Moulay Hassan and the Skala de la Ville. A six-minute walk crosses it, 430 m from Bab Sbaa to Bab Skala by our route calculation.

What is the difference between the kasbah and the medina in Essaouira?

The kasbah was the quarter of power, the garrison, the consuls and the great merchants, the medina that of the souks and the townspeople. Today the kasbah keeps the galleries and merchants’ houses, the medina the markets along the Bab Doukkala axis.

What is the Kasbah Jadida?

It is the new kasbah, laid out on a grid from 1863 to house homes and warehouses, on the Bab Sbaa side. Several of its warehouses have become art galleries, according to the map-guide the town hall published in 2012.

Where can you watch the sunset in the kasbah?

On the Skala de la Ville rampart walk or from a rooftop around Place Moulay Hassan. The sun sets at 17:40 on 21 December and at 19:47 on 21 June, GMT, by our calculation.

Do you need a ticket to visit the kasbah?

No. The culture ministry’s ticket portal sells one Essaouira site only, the Skala du Port, at 60 MAD for a foreign adult. The kasbah’s streets, square and gates have no ticket office online.

Is the kasbah noisy during the Gnaoua Festival?

Near the square, yes: in 2026 the main stage’s last concert started between 00:15 and 00:45 depending on the night. We suggest an address towards the Skala de la Ville, a few lanes from the stage.
