What is inside
The institute stands on derb Lâalouj, the medina street that holds the museums. The official address reads “9, rue Med. Diouri, Derb Lâalouj – 44 000 Essaouira”. Four things run side by side: an exhibition room, film screenings and concerts, a library, and French classes.
French classes cost from 720 MAD for a 30-hour session, 750 MAD online. Workshops start at 330 MAD and certifications at 50 MAD. The 2026 calendar of the Instituts français du Maroc network puts the autumn classroom session from 5 October to 20 December, dates given as a guide only. First-time students sit a placement test before enrolling. Those prices are aimed at residents rather than travellers passing through.
Our view: for a visitor, the value sits in whatever is hanging on the walls and in the library. The rest of the programme is built for people who live in Essaouira.
What is on
The programme changes every month and the official page is the only reliable source. On 17 October 2026 the “Événements” page listed a single date ahead: the screening of “Nino” by Pauline Loquès on 21 October at 19:00. No exhibition appeared there after “MISR”, which closed on 17 July.
The year 2026 gives the measure of the place. Denis Dailleux’s photographic exhibition “MISR” ran from 3 June to 17 July. Arbre à palabres ran on 26 and 27 June, during the Gnaoua festival. In the autumn the institute hosted workshops from the Moga festival’s fringe on 30 September and 1 October. It then put on two dates of the Esther & Salma festival, held from 8 to 11 October, at the Centre culturel municipal.
Every one of those events was billed as free. We suggest you check if-maroc.org/essaouira two days ahead rather than trying the door on spec.
Coming without French, and when to come
Listings are published in French, and only some of them state a language. The Iqtibās show on 8 October 2026, staged at the Centre culturel municipal, was billed in French and Darija. The page for the 21 October screening leaves its “Langue” field blank as of 17 October 2026. A photography show or a concert needs no French at all. For a film, a talk or a debate, ring +212 5 24 47 61 97 before you walk over.
The published hours, Tuesday to Saturday, 09:30–12:30 and 14:30–19:00, are the institute’s own. The library opens for fewer hours: Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 14:30 to 19:00, and Saturday 10:00–12:30 then 14:30–19:00. A one-year membership costs 250 MAD for an adult and 180 MAD for a child or a student. The stated collection is 7,500 items.
Avoid the 12:30 to 14:30 break, and avoid Sunday and Monday. On a Tuesday the institute opens but the library does not. With nothing on the walls, do not climb up from the beach for it. This is not a monument, it is a venue with a programme.
Frequently asked questions
What are the opening hours of the Institut français d’Essaouira?
