Getting around
The medina is closed to cars and crosses on foot in about ten minutes, by our calculation: most visitors need no vehicle at all. Petit taxi for the new town, grand taxi or local bus for Sidi Kaouki and the villages, a bike for the bay, guarded car parks outside the walls.

In Essaouira the real question is not which transport to take, but whether you need any. The medina is closed to cars and crosses on foot in about ten minutes: 760 m from Bab Doukkala to Bab Sbaâ, by our route calculation. Three or four days in town work with no vehicle at all.
What is left comes down to four options, and they do different jobs. The petit taxi for the new town and the hospital. The grand taxi for the coastal villages. The local bus for those same villages, cheaper and slower. A bike for the bay. Car hire only earns its keep outside town.
The medina is walked, not driven
No car goes into the medina: the lanes are two to three metres wide and traffic stops at the gates. Taxis and transfers drop you at Bab Doukkala, Bab Marrakech or Bab Sbaâ, and the last stretch is on foot, luggage and all. Ask your accommodation whether someone can meet you at the gate: many medina addresses have no street number.
Our advice: download an offline map and fix three points in your head, the clock tower, Place Moulay Hassan and the port. Wherever you stand in the medina, one of the three is under ten minutes away. What each district holds is set out in Neighbourhoods & surroundings.
Petit taxi or grand taxi: which one, and where to
The blue petits taxis work the town and never the medina. They run to the new town, the bus station, the far end of the beach and the hospital. No official fare scale is published online for a ride across town, which is paid in cash, in small notes. The meter is not always switched on: ask for it as you get in, or agree the fare first.
The beige grands taxis take six passengers and leave the Bab Doukkala rank when the car is full. This is the normal way to Sidi Kaouki (26 km, 26 min by road) and Moulay Bouzerktoune (29 km, 29 min), by our route calculation. It is also the way to Had Draa’s weekly souk, 30 km out. No official per-seat fare is published, and the fares quoted online for Sidi Kaouki do not agree. Ask the price of a seat before you get in, then the price of the whole car. Diabat, 5 km away, is a petit taxi ride, or a walk along the beach at low tide.
Buses, bikes and cars: what each one changes
Peri-urban transport is run by Lima Bus, which lists nine lines out of Essaouira: line 2 serves Sidi Kaouki, line 3 Smimou. For line 2, the newest timetable on the site, on its home page, shows six departures from Essaouira, 07:20 to 18:30. It is undated, its web address places it in November 2024, and the lines page still carries a July 2022 grid with seven departures. No fare is published (site read on 17 October 2026). Confirm the time with customer service on 06 61 21 34 26, or at Bab Doukkala, ideally the day before. The bus costs far less than a taxi and takes a chunk of your morning.
A bike earns its place on the bay and the Diabat road, not in the medina, where you will push it more than ride it. Scooters and cars park at the gates: every guarded car park is outside the walls, at Bab Marrakech and Bab Doukkala. Their rates are not published online: ask the price as you park. We suggest hiring a car only for one or two targeted days, towards Imsouane or the N8 cooperatives.
For reaching the town in the first place, Supratours and CTM buses included, Getting to Essaouira answers before this section. For kilometres destination by destination, see our Distances pages. The wind decides whether a bike is a good idea that day, and Weather & wind tracks it. What a day costs is priced up in Budget.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to hire a car in Essaouira?
Not for the town itself: the medina is pedestrian and everything in it is done on foot. Hire is worth it for one or two days towards Imsouane, Tafedna or the N8 cooperatives. The car will have to sit in a guarded park outside the walls.
How do I get to Sidi Kaouki from Essaouira without a car?
By grand taxi from the Bab Doukkala rank, which leaves once its six seats are taken: 26 km and 26 minutes by road, by our calculation. Lima Bus line 2 covers the same route for less, with six departures from Essaouira between 07:20 and 18:30 on its newest online timetable, which is undated, to be confirmed on 06 61 21 34 26 or at Bab Doukkala.
Can taxis go into the medina?
No. No vehicle circulates inside the medina. Taxis drop you at Bab Doukkala, Bab Marrakech or Bab Sbaâ, and you walk the rest, luggage included.
How much is a petit taxi ride in Essaouira?
No official fare scale is published online, and the fares quoted on travel sites do not agree with each other. Pay in cash, and ask for the meter as you get in or agree the fare first.
Where can I park in Essaouira?
In the guarded car parks outside the walls, at Bab Marrakech and Bab Doukkala, whose rates are not published. No medina street is reachable by car, and there is no point driving closer.

Other sections in Guides
- Getting to EssaouiraThere is no train to Essaouira: the 175 km from Marrakech are done by road. A CTM or Supratours coach takes 3 hours for 100 to 125 MAD (fares read on 16 October 2026), a car about 2 h 45. Mogador airport (ESU) is 17 km out, on seasonal routes.

- Distances & travel times from EssaouiraRoad distance, drive time, one option without a car and a day-trip verdict for 25 destinations from Essaouira, Diabat to Tangier. A ≈ marks a figure we have not checked yet. A figure without it carries its source and the date we verified it.

- When to visitSeptember and October for the town, April to August for the wind. Essaouira records 147 days a year above 15 knots and its monthly mean highs never pass 23 °C. This section gives the climate month by month, the festivals and the crowds, from the 1991-2020 normals.

- BudgetThe bed sets the cost of a day in Essaouira, not the food. For a November 2026 night in the medina, a dorm bed runs 85 to 200 MAD, a double in a plain riad 360 to 440 MAD, a smarter riad 900 MAD and up. The bus from Marrakech costs 100 to 125 MAD.

- Health & safetyEssaouira is a safe town. The real risk is the ocean: rip currents, cold water, a wind that pushes anything afloat out to sea. Lifeguards in summer, in the bay only. A private clinic has run 24-hour emergencies since July 2024, and works are announced at the public hospital. Police 19, gendarmerie 177, fire 15.

- Money & paymentsCash first in Essaouira: the port stands, taxis, souks and small dining rooms take dirham notes only. Withdraw on arrival, in one go and in daylight, at the machines in the medina or on boulevard de la Corniche. At a card terminal, pay in dirhams. For Gnaoua, 24 to 26 June 2027, withdraw before it opens.

- Internet & SIM cardsBuy a local SIM on arrival, passport in hand, from Maroc Telecom, Orange or inwi. At Orange the card costs 20 MAD and 50 MAD buys 11 GB for 30 days on promotion (October 2026). 4G across town, 5G in Essaouira according to Orange. A coworking space in the medina for meetings.

- Living in EssaouiraA month or a year in Essaouira comes down to four things. A lease in the new town, best looked for between October and March. Three months without a permit, then the residence card from the police. Wind above 15 knots on 147 days a year. And a single French school, 65 pupils. What is missing, we say.
