Port
Essaouira’s port opens beyond the Porte de la Marine, and its harbour office is a 3-minute walk from Place Moulay Hassan. It is a workplace you cross in a quarter of an hour: boats, fish auction, slipway and grills. Come in the morning, as the boats come in, and keep the Skala du Port for last.

The port is a workplace before it is a neighbourhood. It opens beyond the Porte de la Marine, at the end of Place Moulay Hassan. The harbour office, where the quay begins, is 220 m and a 3-minute walk from the square by our route calculation. Nobody sleeps here. Our view: this is the liveliest quarter in town for as long as the morning lasts.
To place the port among the town’s twelve zones, read our map of Essaouira’s neighbourhoods. This page tells you when to go, which way to walk and what is best avoided.
What lies beyond the Porte de la Marine
Three things fit into this small quarter. First the grills, between the square and the gate, where OpenStreetMap maps a row of fish restaurants. Then the working port: the fishing boats, the trawlers and the slipway where hulls are hauled out of the water (Agence nationale des ports). Our fishing port page walks it quay by quay, auction and boatyard included.
Finally, above the quay, the Skala du Port, the rampart that guards the harbour, has its own page for the ticket and the hours. Our view: climb it after the quay, not before. From above, you recognise what you have just seen up close.
How long, and at what time
You cross the quarter in a quarter of an hour. From Place Moulay Hassan to the fish market inside the port, our calculation gives 475 m and 6 minutes. From the square to the tip of the main breakwater, it measures under 900 m. From Bab Doukkala, allow 1 km and 14 minutes along avenue Zerktouni, and 1.2 km and 16 minutes from Bab Marrakech.
The port lives in the morning. The sun rises at 6:43 in mid-October, at 7:34 on 21 December and at 5:35 on 21 June, by our calculation. Our view: arrive early, as the boats come in, and save the grill for lunch.
In the evening, the show moves west. The sun sets over the ocean at 17:40 on 21 December and at 19:47 on 21 June. We suggest watching it from the quay, once the crews have finished their day.
Sleeping, eating, and what to avoid
To sleep, the closest option is the neighbouring kasbah, under five minutes’ walk from the quay. Our pick of riads sorts the addresses in the kasbah and the medina. If your days happen on the water, the sand of the bay begins 510 m from the fish market, a 7-minute walk by our calculation, with its hotels along the boulevard.
To eat, the port does one thing: fish chosen at the stall, weighed, then grilled next door. We found no prices published by the stalls. Our guide to the fish market explains the weighing, which fish to buy in which season and why the lobster is best left on its ice.
Three things to avoid. Following someone who approaches you at the Porte de la Marine to take you to “his” stall: choose for yourself. Photographing a crew or a boatbuilder without asking: the port is a workplace. Coming by car: in 2025 UNESCO asked Morocco for a study to manage traffic and parking around the port. Our view: the port is done on foot, and it is done in the morning.

Skala du Port
Skala du Port entry: 60 MAD for a foreign adult, 30 MAD for a foreign child aged 7 to 13. Moroccans and residents pay 30 and 10 MAD, and Moroccans get in free on Fridays (Ministry of Culture, read 17 October 2026). No hours are published for the site itself: the portal gives 09:00–17:00 for all its sites.

Landmark
Port de pêche d’Essaouira
Essaouira’s fishing port is a workplace, not a visitor site: the National Ports Agency publishes no hours and no ticket for it. It landed 4,572 tonnes from January to the end of April 2026, up 26% year on year (ONP). No official source gives the time of the fish auction. Our advice: an hour, in the morning.

Frequently asked questions
Where can you eat grilled fish at Essaouira port?
At the stalls lined up between Place Moulay Hassan and the Porte de la Marine, where you choose the fish before it is weighed and grilled. Have the price per kilo and the cooking charge said before the weighing: we found no published prices.
What time should you go to Essaouira port?
In the morning, as the boats come in: that is our advice, with sunrise at 6:43 in mid-October and 7:34 on 21 December. Keep lunch for the grill and sunset for the quay.
How long is the walk from the medina to Essaouira port?
Three minutes from Place Moulay Hassan, and 14 minutes and 1 km from Bab Doukkala, by our route calculation. The quarter itself measures under 900 m, from the square to the end of the breakwater.
Where should you stay near Essaouira port?
In the kasbah, the nearest zone, in a riad under five minutes’ walk from the quay. If you have come for the beach or for kitesurfing, the bay’s hotels start a 7-minute walk from the fish market.
Where can you park to visit Essaouira port?
We suggest leaving the car and finishing on foot: from Bab Marrakech, the fish market inside the port is 1.2 km and a 16-minute walk by our calculation. In 2025 UNESCO again asked Morocco for the study meant to manage traffic and parking around the port.
