What the centre shows, and when to go

The centre opened on Wednesday 22 November 2023. It was paid for by SMIT, Morocco’s state tourism engineering company, as part of the 2019–2023 medina rehabilitation programme. Building work had begun in August 2021 at the Bab Sbaa gate. The project was announced under a longer name: the “Centre for the Interpretation of the Tourist and Architectural Heritage of the Essaouira Medina”.

The opening announcement promised interactive exhibitions, workshops and talks on the town’s history, traditions and crafts. No official source has described the rooms since. Nobody publishes a list of the models or screens, the languages of the panels or the floor area.

Our advice: make it your first stop, before you lose yourself in the lanes of the listed medina. A place that tells the town’s story makes more sense before the wandering than after it.

Hours, price and address: what is published, and by whom

As of 17 October 2026, no official source publishes hours, prices or a contact. The operator, SDL Essaouira Culture Arts et Patrimoine, has no website or social page that we could find. SMIT, which paid for the centre, says nothing about it either. Travel blogs give hours and free entry without citing the operator, so we do not repeat them.

MAP, the state news agency, put the centre at the Bab Sbaa gate in October 2024. The gate closes off the end of avenue du Caire, and the tourist office sits on that avenue, about forty metres away. Some travel guides say the centre is inside the office, which no official source confirms. From Place Moulay Hassan, it is 380 m and 5 minutes on foot to Bab Sbaa, by our route calculation.

Our advice: treat it as a detour on your way into the medina through Bab Sbaa, not as an outing in itself. If the door is shut, you have lost no more than a five-minute walk from the square.

What this centre is not

It is not a museum with a collection. The culture ministry’s list of heritage interpretation centres, published on data.gov.ma, leaves it out. For Essaouira it names only Bayt Dakira, the house of Jewish memory, created in 2018. The Bab Sbaa centre comes under tourism and SMIT. Its management went to the SDL under an agreement signed by two ministries, SMIT, the province, the provincial council and the town council.

It draws people all the same: more than 10,000 visitors in eleven months. The figure comes from the provincial tourism delegate, quoted by MAP on 19 October 2024. No later figure has been published.

Our advice: until someone publishes its hours, do not save it for a windy afternoon. Pair it with a walk through the kasbah, from Bab Sbaa to the Skala. Then head to the town’s museums and galleries for the paintings and objects.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Essaouira heritage interpretation centre free?

Neither the operator nor SMIT publishes a price as of 17 October 2026. The online guides that call it free cite no official source, so ask at the door.

What are the opening hours of the heritage centre in Essaouira?

No official source publishes hours as of 17 October 2026, and the operator has no website, phone number or public account that we could find. The only way to know is to go to the door at Bab Sbaa, a 5-minute walk from Place Moulay Hassan.

Where is the heritage interpretation centre in Essaouira?

On avenue du Caire, at the Bab Sbaa gate, on the kasbah side of the medina. Place Moulay Hassan is 380 m away, 5 minutes on foot.

Is the interpretation centre inside the tourist office?

Some travel guides say the tourist office on avenue du Caire houses it, but no official source confirms this. The press places it at the Bab Sbaa gate, and the office is about forty metres from the gate.

How long does the heritage centre take to visit?

No official source gives a visit length. We will not put a figure on it until one is published or we have been round ourselves.

What is the difference between the interpretation centre and Bayt Dakira?

Bayt Dakira, in the mellah, tells the story of the town’s Jewish community and has been on the culture ministry’s list since 2018. The Bab Sbaa centre, opened in 2023 under tourism, covers the medina itself: its history, traditions and crafts, according to the opening announcement.
