- RiadsA riad is a medina courtyard house. No car to the door, luggage carried in by hand, a courtyard that passes sound, a terrace on the roof. Choose the floor before the star rating: the top room, next to the terrace, is the quietest. For the water, sleep on the bay.
- HotelsChoose a hotel over a riad if you arrive by car, with children or with a wet kite each evening. Nearly all of Essaouira’s hotels stand outside the walls on the beach road, 10 to 25 minutes on foot from place Moulay Hassan: parking, a pool, a lift, rooms for four. Sea view in winter, poolside in summer.
- GuesthousesA guesthouse here is a host’s home at Diabat, Ghazoua or Sidi Kaouki, with a garden, often a pool, and dinner cooked to order. Quiet in exchange for the medina at night: without a car, budget a transfer for every outing. Better for a second stay than for three nights.
- ApartmentsApartment rentals for a weekend, a month or a kite season.
- Surf & kite campsA camp sells bed, gear, lessons and transport in one price. Surf at Sidi Kaouki from October to April: three camps, from €380 for six nights to €920 for seven (the camps’ sites, 16 and 25 October 2026). Kite from April to September, in a riad or villa. Independent riders and medina lovers: sleep elsewhere.

Villa Maroc, at 10 rue Abdellah Ben Yassine, is a 21-room hotel spread over four old courtyard houses in the kasbah, 60 m from the clock gate. There is a hammam, Moroccan dinner in-house and breakfast on the roof. No nightly rate shows without dates: three nights for two start at 9,800 MAD (rate checked on 25 October 2026).

Surf Twins, the school run by twins Mouhssin and Yassine, is at Sidi Kaouki, 26 km south of Essaouira. Six nights in a private room cost €380 with a guide, for those who already surf, €450 with 12 hours of lessons, €550 with yoga. Riad Lyon Mogador has 11 rooms on three floors round a patio at 39 rue Ceuta in the medina, a 5-minute walk from Bab Doukkala. Camille and Jean-Charles have run it since 2021. Expect 781.84 MAD for a standard double on the night of 12 November, breakfast included (rate checked on 25 October 2026). The family suite sleeps four.
