Living in Essaouira

A month or a year in Essaouira comes down to four things. A lease in the new town, best looked for between October and March. Three months without a permit, then the residence card from the police. Wind above 15 knots on 147 days a year. And a single French school, 65 pupils. What is missing, we say.

Living in Essaouira for a month or a year comes down to four decisions, in this order: the lease, the season, the wind, the paperwork. The lease, because we advise the new town for a year-round let. The season, because the same flat is let by the night from June to September. The wind, because it blows above 15 knots 147 days a year and it picks your floor and your afternoons. The paperwork, because a tourist stay ends at three months.

Renting by the month: the new town, and winter

We advise renting outside the walls. The new town, 10 to 25 minutes on foot from the ramparts depending on the street, is where residents live. We do not give a rent range yet: online listings are not enough, and we have not yet surveyed rents on the ground.

The season does the rest. Our advice: look between October and March, outside the season for nightly lets, arrive in November, rent by the month, and sign for the year after a windy night in the neighbourhood. Ask for a written, legalised lease. Our apartments section sorts addresses by the week and by the month.

The wind as a neighbour

Essaouira has 147 days a year above 15 knots on the 1991-2020 normals. From April to August the trade wind gets up late in the morning and builds until evening. A north-facing balcony is useless on those afternoons, and sand comes in through a window left open on the bay. Rent on the courtyard or the south side, and take the beach in the morning. From November to February the flow drops and nights fall to 11 to 14 °C. Heating is not guaranteed: ask about it before you ask about the view. The month-by-month climate is in When to visit, and the day’s wind in Weather & wind.

Working, schooling, staying well

Remote work depends on the flat’s connection and on 4G: ask about the speed before you sign. Operators, SIM cards and top-up prices are covered in Internet & SIM cards, not here.

There is one French school: Groupe scolaire Éric-Tabarly, quartier des Dunes, a partner school of the Mission laïque française with 65 pupils. It is accredited from nursery to CM2 (year 6), with lower secondary and seconde through the CNED distance programme (AEFE listing, read on 25 September 2026). It is the only school in town on the AEFE list. Moroccan schools, state and private, are not yet covered here.

The emergency numbers, the private clinic that opened in 2024 and the public hospital are in Health & safety. Doctors see patients in private practices. We found no published consultation fee: ask the price when you book. Travel insurance often stops at 90 days: an expatriate policy is taken out before you leave. We have no verified list of doctors, so there is no list.

Paperwork, the bank, and everyone else

A tourist stay may not exceed three consecutive months in any six. Beyond that, you apply for a residence permit at the central police station or the gendarmerie for where you live. The card is renewed every year until a ten-year permit (France Diplomatie, page dated 8 October 2025, read on 16 October 2026). The officers tell you which documents to bring, and the permit depends on proof of means. File before the end of the third month.

The Office des changes lets banks open foreign-currency and convertible-dirham accounts for foreigners, resident or not. Ask the branch which documents it wants, and whether it will open an ordinary dirham account without a residence permit. Cash machines and fees are in Money & payments.

The communities exist, without a directory: expat and nomad groups on Facebook and WhatsApp, by language and by activity. We recommend none of them by name. The one place that gathers everyone without a membership is the Institut français d’Essaouira, rue Mohamed Diouri: media library, classes, free concerts in 2026. The rest happens at the neighbourhood café.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a flat by the month in Essaouira?

We do not publish a range yet: we found no published rent survey for Essaouira, and online listings are not enough. We advise the new town and a search between October and March, outside the season when the same flat is let by the night.

Can you stay in Morocco for more than three months without a residence permit?

No. A tourist stay ends at three consecutive months in any six (France Diplomatie, 8 October 2025). Beyond that, the residence card is applied for at the central police station where you live and renewed every year until a ten-year permit.

Is there a French school in Essaouira?

Yes, one: Groupe scolaire Éric-Tabarly, quartier des Dunes, 65 pupils. It is accredited from nursery to CM2, with lower secondary and seconde through the CNED (AEFE listing, read on 25 September 2026). There is no full French lycée in town, the nearest are in Marrakech and Agadir.

Is the wind a problem if you live in Essaouira all year?

It blows above 15 knots 147 days a year, mostly from April to August and in the afternoon. It spoils a north-facing balcony, not a courtyard. Rent on the sheltered side and live outdoors in the morning: that is what residents do, and winter is calm.

Can you open a bank account in Essaouira without a residence card?

A foreign-currency or convertible-dirham account, yes: the Office des changes lets banks open one for non-resident foreigners. For an ordinary dirham account and the list of documents, ask at the branch.
