Getting to Essaouira
There is no train to Essaouira: the 175 km from Marrakech are done by road. A CTM or Supratours coach takes 3 hours for 100 to 125 MAD (fares read on 16 October 2026), a car about 2 h 45. Mogador airport (ESU) is 17 km out, on seasonal routes.

For most readers the answer is the coach from Marrakech. Allow three hours and 100 to 125 MAD a ticket. Supratours runs up to seven departures a day and CTM just one, according to their booking engines on 16 October 2026. Supratours sets you down 3 minutes’ walk from Bab Marrakech, a gate of the medina. CTM stops on Place du 11 Janvier in the Azlif estate, 20 minutes’ walk from the same gate, by our route calculation. Everything else is a variation on that answer. More flexible and dearer by car or private transfer, quicker but rarer by air, less comfortable by grand taxi.
Essaouira has no railway station. The train stops in Marrakech and the remaining 175 km are done by road whichever option you take. Three questions settle it: where you are starting from, how many of you there are and with how much luggage, and what time you have to arrive. This section takes the options in that order.
From Marrakech: coach, grand taxi or car
The N8 via Chichaoua runs about 175 km, toll-free and in good condition. A route planner on OpenStreetMap data puts it at about 2 h 45 without stopping. Lorry traffic and the crossing of Chichaoua weigh more than the distance does. The road figure, its date and its source live on the Essaouira – Marrakech page in our Distances & travel times from Essaouira section, not here.
CTM and Supratours both advertise 3 hours from Marrakech to Essaouira. Supratours arrives at the Marrakech railway station, which saves a taxi if you are carrying on by train. Fares are only published inside the booking engines. On 16 October 2026, for departures between 17 and 24 October, a single adult fare was 100 MAD with Supratours (125 MAD on the 09:00 departure) and 105 MAD with CTM, whose one daily coach leaves at 08:30. Book ahead in summer and during the Gnaoua festival.
The grand taxi leaves Bab Doukkala once its six seats are taken. It is more flexible on timing, but luggage space is tight and the price is agreed before you get in. Our advice: for two people with suitcases the coach wins. For four, hiring the whole car costs much the same and you pick your departure time.
Flying in, and arriving from Agadir or Casablanca
Essaouira-Mogador airport (ESU) sits south-east of town, 17 km and about 20 minutes by road from the medina. It lives on seasonal European routes. The schedule changes from one season to the next, so check it with your airline before building a trip around it. No bus serves the terminal. A riad shuttle or a booked transfer beats hunting for a taxi outside, especially in the evening.
Many arrivals in fact come through Marrakech-Menara, 180 km and about 2 h 45 away by road without stopping. The airport is on the right side of the city, so you join the N8 without crossing Marrakech. From Agadir, allow 175 km of N1 via Tamanar and about 3 hours without stopping. The road winds, and aiming to beat that time gains you nothing. From Casablanca, the road runs 360 km along the coast via Safi, or 395 km by the Marrakech motorway. The direct CTM coach takes 6 h 30 to 7 h 30. We would rather take the train to Marrakech and the coach from the station.
What this section does not cover
Operators change their times and their fares without notice. Those quoted here were read in their booking engines on 16 October 2026. The journey-by-journey detail, kilometres, duration, coach and grand taxi with its verification date, belongs to the Distances & travel times from Essaouira section. Once you are here, Getting around takes over for petits taxis, grands taxis and car hire. When to visit explains the wind and the seasons, and Budget what a day on the spot costs.

- Distances & travel times from EssaouiraRoad distance, drive time, one option without a car and a day-trip verdict for 25 destinations from Essaouira, Diabat to Tangier. A ≈ marks a figure we have not checked yet. A figure without it carries its source and the date we verified it.

- Getting aroundThe medina is closed to cars and crosses on foot in about ten minutes, by our calculation: most visitors need no vehicle at all. Petit taxi for the new town, grand taxi or local bus for Sidi Kaouki and the villages, a bike for the bay, guarded car parks outside the walls.

- When to visitSeptember and October for the town, April to August for the wind. Essaouira records 147 days a year above 15 knots and its monthly mean highs never pass 23 °C. This section gives the climate month by month, the festivals and the crowds, from the 1991-2020 normals.

- BudgetThe bed sets the cost of a day in Essaouira, not the food. For a November 2026 night in the medina, a dorm bed runs 85 to 200 MAD, a double in a plain riad 360 to 440 MAD, a smarter riad 900 MAD and up. The bus from Marrakech costs 100 to 125 MAD.

- Health & safetyEssaouira is a safe town. The real risk is the ocean: rip currents, cold water, a wind that pushes anything afloat out to sea. Lifeguards in summer, in the bay only. A private clinic has run 24-hour emergencies since July 2024, and works are announced at the public hospital. Police 19, gendarmerie 177, fire 15.

- Money & paymentsCash first in Essaouira: the port stands, taxis, souks and small dining rooms take dirham notes only. Withdraw on arrival, in one go and in daylight, at the machines in the medina or on boulevard de la Corniche. At a card terminal, pay in dirhams. For Gnaoua, 24 to 26 June 2027, withdraw before it opens.

- Internet & SIM cardsBuy a local SIM on arrival, passport in hand, from Maroc Telecom, Orange or inwi. At Orange the card costs 20 MAD and 50 MAD buys 11 GB for 30 days on promotion (October 2026). 4G across town, 5G in Essaouira according to Orange. A coworking space in the medina for meetings.

- Living in EssaouiraA month or a year in Essaouira comes down to four things. A lease in the new town, best looked for between October and March. Three months without a permit, then the residence card from the police. Wind above 15 knots on 147 days a year. And a single French school, 65 pupils. What is missing, we say.
